Up Atlanta » Shirley's Soul Food Slideshow

One other outing I did was a touch of the "Feasting on Asphalt" tour that Alton Brown did on the Food Network. On our last day in town Joe, Tom Gallo and I rode out to Shirley's Soul Food in Toccoa, GA to have some down-home southern soul food. Little did we expect what a wonderfully warm group of folks Shirley, her mother, and the rest of the folks working there would be. The welcomed us with open arms and made us feel like family, and then fed us some of the best southern cooking I had eaten in a long time! Shirley is quite the woman; she gets up every morning and drives a school bus, then comes in and cooks and serves food in the restaurant most of the day, then heads back out in the afternoon to take the kids back home on the bus. Someone apparently told Shirley's mom that Joe can carry a tune so she pestered him the entire meal with, "I hear that man can sing, well you're gonna sing me a song before you get outta here!" It was a lot of fun watchin Joe squirm and having "Mom" give him a hard time, but then she Joe and stood in the middle of that little restaurant and sang Amazing Grace together in some of the prettiest harmony I've heard in a while. It was a really special moment that I'll always remember.
